Catholic church in UAE to empty holy water fonts amid COVID-19 scare

The Apostolic Vicariate of Southern Arabia has released precautionary guidelines on holding masses in the UAE Oman and Yemen.
In a release on March 4, 2020, the vicariate said the Catholic churches in these countries will empty holy water fonts.
This comes as the cases of COVID-19 in the UAE jumps to 45 overnight. In Oman, the cases of infected people has climbed to 15. No confirmed cases were reported yet in Yemen.
The Vicariate also reminded the faithful that holy communion will be received by hand and handshakes will be replaced by bowing of the head to reduce contact during masses.
Cathecism classes will likewise be suspended according to governmental guidelines on class cancellations
The faithful were also urged to observe proper hygiene especially during sneezing or coughing.
Individuals with serious colds or other illness were also advised by the Vicariate to stay at home.
The vicariate stressed that it will adhere to recommendations of authorities on cleaning and disinfecting of schools and public places.
It also discouraged group visits on churches this Lent season. An approval from the bishop must be sought when organizing pilgrimages on churches and holy sites, church group meetings, the Vicariate added.
Further developments may prompt the vicariate to extend the guideline or implement more preventive measures.
