Actress Alice Dixson has admitted experiencing mild depression in Canada, especially during gloomy days when the sun wouldn’t show.
The actress, who migrated to Canada in 2000, said what she experienced was called winter depression.
Mayo Clinic defines winter depression or seasonal affective disorder (SAD) in medical terms as a type of depression that mostly start in the fall and continue into the winter months.
Usually, according to National Healthcare Service (NHS), SAD is also often linked to reduced exposure to sunlight during the shorter autumn and winter days.
The main theory is that a lack of sunlight could stop a part of the brain called the hypothalamus from working properly, which may affect the productions of melatonin and serotonin, and affect the body’s internal clock or circadian rhythm.
Dixson, shared in an article by ABS-CBN News, that what she went through was her inspiration in portraying her role as Eloisa Svendsen in a movie entitled, “NUUK”.
Dixson’s character is a lonely immigrant who lost her husband and suffered depression.
The movie was shot in Greenland.
She is joined by actor Aga Muhlach in this suspense psycho-thriller movie which will be shown in theaters on Nov. 6.
