Pinay kid wins Dh10,000 in singing competition in Dubai

An 11-year old Filipina took home Dh10,000 after being hailed as the grand champion of a singing competition in Dubai, December 9.

Keira Isabelle Celiz, whose parents are from Iloilo City, is currently studying in GEMS Founders School. She beat 14 other contestants in GEMS Best of the Best 2018 – Juniors Division held at the Gem Modern Academy.

Celiz performed Feeling Good by Nina Simone.

In an exclusive interview with The Filipino Times, Celiz’s mother, Bree, expressed how proud she is for her daughter’s achievement.

Celiz had to first go through initial auditions alongside 247 others before the auditionees were narrowed down to 15 finalists.

“We felt very nervous and amazed during her performance. It felt like we are looking into a different person on stage–the way she sung as well as her stage presence. We did not really expect it because all the candidates are superb. They had proper voice lessons and training, while my daughter is only singing at home for fun,” Bree told TFT.

Aside from Dh10,000 cash, Celiz also took home a trophy for winning the competition.

Two other Filipinas, Natalie Kate Atay from Al Khaleej National School and Sara Esmaeili (Filipina-Emirati) from GEMS Metropole School competed in the seniors division of the same competition.
