Senate website hit by defacement attack, security review underway

The Senate of the Philippines confirmed that its official website had been defaced, prompting an investigation into the incident, as a group identifying itself as “Nullsec Philippines” claimed responsibility for the cyberattack.

In a statement, the Senate said its technical team immediately activated security protocols after detecting the incident and launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the extent and cause of the unauthorized activity.

“Upon detection of the incident, our technical team immediately initiated security protocols, contained the issue, and commenced a comprehensive investigation to determine the cause and extent of the unauthorized activity,” the Senate said.

The chamber added that additional security measures are being implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.

According to the Senate, initial assessments showed that no confidential or sensitive information had been compromised.

“The website primarily contains publicly available documents and informational materials intended for public access,” it said.

The Senate assured the public that safeguarding the integrity and availability of its systems remains a top priority and said it would continue monitoring the situation and provide updates when necessary.

Website defacement is a form of cyberattack in which hackers alter the appearance or content of a website.

On Facebook, the group Nullsec Philippines claimed responsibility for the incident and issued a warning that it was “watching” the Senate.

“The Filipino people entrusted you with power, responsibility, and the duty to serve the nation—not personal interests, political dynasties, or corrupt networks,” the group said in a statement.

The organization also called for greater transparency and accountability in government, saying citizens are paying close attention to public officials and institutions.

As of Thursday morning, visitors to the Senate website were greeted with a notice indicating that the portal was under maintenance.

Access to the Senate premises also remains restricted while employees are under work-from-home arrangements from June 10 to 11 amid heightened security measures in response to alleged threats.
