The UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has clarified that only airlines and aircraft registered in Qatar are banned from flying in the country’s airspace.
The GCAA said private companies and chartered flights can continue to use the country’s airports and can transit through the airspace to and from Qatar.
Aviation companies that wish to cross the UAE’s airspace must submit a request to GCAA and a list of names and nationalities of crews and passengers at least 24 hours before the private and chartered flights, WAM reported.
GCAA’s announcement came in response to Qatar Airways’ statement that UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain violate international law by halting Qatari flights.
Emirates 24/7 quoted GCAA as saying the UAE’s decision to shut down Qatar Airways’ operation in the country is in accordance with the provisions of the Convention on International Civil Aviation “Chicago Convention 1994”. The shutdown was made to ensure the safety of international civil aviation and the flow of international air traffic, GCAA said.
GCAA added it will uphold its right to impose measures to guarantee the security and safety of UAE and its residents.
