Government forces have cornered the Maute militants in four barangays in Marawi City, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said Wednesday.
AFP spokesman Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla declined to name the four villages for security reasons.
Padilla said the city has 96 barangays.
The AFP spokesman also said about 100 Maute fighters are still putting up resistance in Marawi. The number has dwindled from 400 to 500 when the Islamic State-inspired group seized the city on May 23.
Meanwhile, Padilla said technical assistance from the U.S. military has given AFP troops advantage over the militants in terms of intelligence.
