Gov’t charges Maute mom, supporters with rebellion

The mother of the Maute brothers, a former mayor and nine other suspected supporters of the deadly attacks in Marawi City were charged with rebellion on Tuesday.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II announced on Wednesday the indictment of Ominta Romato Maute alias Farhana, former Marawi City Mayor Fajad Salic, Sumaya Bangkit Masakal, Radiea Tugosa Asire, Mariam Ibnu Abubakar, Zafeerah Rosales Musa, Nehreen Macaraya Abdul, Nora Moctar Limgas, Mardiyya Haji Ali, Sumayya Lawi Ali, and Noronisa Haji Camal.

The charge was filed before the Misamis Oriental Regional Trial Court.

Prosecutors said there was probable cause that the accused connived with the Islamic State-inspired Maute group in attacking and taking over Marawi City on May 23, including the killing of troops, police officers and civilians. The attacks prompted President Rodrigo Duterte to impose martial law in Mindanao.

Farhana advises and finances the Maute group, according to Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana. She was arrested at a military checkpoint in Masiu, Lanao del Sur on June 9 along with two wounded Maute members and seven still unidentified women, GMA News reported.

Salic was arrested at a checkpoint in Barangay San Martin in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental on June 7.

More than 300 individuals identified as members of the Maute group, the Abu Sayyaf group, and their sympathizers have been charged for the crime of rebellion, so far.
