Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Secretary Silvestre Bello III has ordered Philippine recruitment agencies to monitor their deployed OFWs in Qatar.
Bello issued the order as part of the department’s contingency plan in helping OFWs that will be affected by the diplomatic crisis in the Gulf region.
The DOLE is also concerned the crisis will affect OFWs in the countries that cut ties with Qatar.
Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Egypt, Yemen and Maldives cut diplomatic ties with Qatar as they accused Doha of financing terrorist groups. Saudi Arabia, UAE and Bahrain also imposed an economic blockade on Qatar and ordered Qatari nationals to leave their countries within 14 days from June 5.
“It is now highly possible we will also send an augmentation team to countries which cut ties with Qatar to monitor the situation of OFWs there,” Manila Bulletin quoted DOLE Undersecretary Dominador Say as saying.
Say said the Gulf crisis may make it harder for the government to locate affected OFWs.
Say is spearheading the head of the crisis team that has been tasked by Bello to monitor Qatar’s diplomatic crisis.
