Following the meeting held this week by the European Parliament to discuss their planned motion to immediately free detained Senator Leila de Lima, the organization has already pushed through with their appeal to the Philippine government.
In a resolution released on Thursday, March 16 which Rappler got a hold of, the European Parliament said it “calls for the immediate release of Senator Leila M. De Lima, and for her to be provided with adequate security whilst in detention.” Furthermore, the members of the Parliament asked the Filipino officials “to ensure a fair trial, recalling the right to the presumption of innocence, to drop all politically motivated charges against her, and to end any further acts of harassment against her.”
The controversial death penalty bill that is currently being tackled was also addressed by the Parliament. The European lawmakers urged the current administration to “immediately halt ongoing proceedings to reinstate the death penalty.”
