French driver Anthoine Hubert killed in F2 crash

French driver Anthoine Hubert died after a major accident during the Formula 2 Feature Race at Spa-Francorchamps.

In a statement posted on its website, Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) announced Hubert’s passing following a horrific crash that involved three other drivers.

“We would like to extend our deepest condolences to Anthoine’s family, loved ones, and friends. We would also like to send our heartfelt sympathies to the entire Arden team,” the statement read.

FIA also announced the cancellation of the F2 race today.

According to a report by The Guardian, the incident involved Hubert and Juan Manuel Correa’s cars. Both cars took major damage but it was Hubert’s car that was “almost disintegrated”.

Correa, on the other hand, is in stable condition, as of this writing.

Hubert is the first driver who died as a result of an accident in an F1 event.

Hubert has been part of FIA’s paddock since 2017. They described him as a “fantastic driver who had a bright future ahead of him”.

The French driver became GP3 Series Champion last year. This season, he also won twice in Formula 2, taking victories in Monaco, and at his home race in Le Castellet.

“He was kind to everyone, always smiling, and his positive attitude was infectious. He will be dearly missed.”
