Huge diamond unearthed in eastern Sierra Leone

A 706-carat diamond was reported unearthed in Kono district in Eastern Sierra Leone by a church pastor.

Pastor Emmanuel Momoh, handed the big ‘diadem’ over to President Ernest Bai Koroma, who thanked him for not smuggling it out of the country.

President Koroma promised the church pastor, he will be rewarded with some of the proceeds from the sale of the diamond, CNN reported.

The President said the government plans to auction the diamond to the highest bidder.

The gem though unusually large, may not be the largest ever found, the report said.

An uncut 1,109-carat diamond was found last year, making it the largest uncut diamond ever found. It was auctioned in London. -HEM
