The United Nations (UN) World Food Programme has warned that coronavirus disease (COVID-19) could result in a hunger crisis of ‘biblical’ proportions.
In a report by The National, Executive Director David Beasley said that the pandemic has resulted in “the worst humanitarian crisis since World War II,” and that without intervention, around 300,000 may starve to death in a few months.
He added that millions of people in war-torn countries are already on the brink of starvation, and that famine is “very real and dangerous possibility.”
“If we can’t reach these people with the life-saving assistance they need, our analysis shows that 300,000 people could starve to death every single day over a three-month period,” he said.
Beasley said that to mitigate famine, fighting nations must unite in peace to provide humanitarian access to communities most vulnerable to hunger.
