Syrian-born vlogger Basel Manadil, also known as “The Hungry Syrian Wanderer,” has shown time and again that the bayanihan spirit can shine through the toughest times.
The Manila-based foreign vlogger bought tons of vegetables from Baguio City farmers which he distributed to the poor who are hard hit by the impact of enhanced community quarantine.
He penned in a Facebook post last April 13, “I managed to buy second hand boxes, made them myself and repacked everything in one day.”
“Simpleng kontribusyon ko po sa mga Pilipino na aking tinuturing na Kababayan,” he added.
As to why he chose to distribute vegetables instead of the usual relief goods, he explained that not only these staple foods are nutritious, but it is also a way to help Filipino farmers.
“Im having a break from giving canned goods, mas masustansya kung kakain po tayo ng gulay and at the same time we help farmers by buying their products.”
In his two-part Youtube vlog, he is seen repacking the vegetables he bought in boxes. He also shared that he had a hard time looking for these relief boxes, but it was all worth it after being able to see smiles in the faces of people he met on the streets.
“As you can see I’m very very exhausted now, but we’re almost done so it’s sulit, worth it,” he said.
He also encouraged people to spread kindness in these trying times. “I just want to use this platform to help those who are in need and to send awareness. If I can do it, you can too. Spread kindness and positivity.”
