Italy surpasses China in COVID-19 with over 3,400 deaths, infected now at 41,035

The death toll due to coronavirus disease or COVID-19 in Italy has climbed to 3,405, surpassing China’s record of fatalities.
Italian officials on Thursday recorded 5,322 cases, raising the total number to 41,035.

Health officials are scrambling to fight the virus and had rushed graduating medical doctors on the scene to address the shortage on healthcare.
According to a report published on Wednesday by Gruppo Italiano per la Medicina Basata sulle Evidenze (GIMBE), around 2,629 health workers contracted the virus while treating patients because of shortage of equipment and protective gears in the most affected country in Europe.

Italy is expected to extend the nationwide lockdown, which has been in place since March 10.
