Labor officials clarify that there is no ongoing mass layoff of Filipino domestic workers in Hong Kong due to the coronavirus disease or COVID-19.
The statements were made after Overseas Workers Welfare Administration or OWWA Chief Hans Cacdac revealed that at least 35 OFWs were terminated at the height of the virus outbreak.
Cacdac however said that these numbers are just ‘minimal’ compared to the total number of workers in the Chinese state.
“Relatively hindi significant ang numbers kung 200,000 ang OFWs sa Hong Kong so patuloy ang pakikipag-usap sa employment agencies na maging mapag unawa sa sitwasyon,” he explained.
In an interview, Cacdac said that 16 OFWs were terminated after their employers decided to leave Hong Kong or were relocated.
12 Filipino workers lost their jobs due to disagreement with employers in limiting their sunday offs.
“Walang alarming rate of unemployment for our overseas Filipino workers,” Bello said.
