Dubai hit-and-run driver arrested; CCTV gave him away

In just 12 hours after the incident, Dubai Police, acting on footages from a CCTV, arrested the driver of a car that hit an Asian woman in her 50s as she was crossing a street and sped away. The victim sustained severe injuries that led to her death.

In a statement released yesterday, Dubai Police said they arrested a GCC national.

Brigadier Jamal Salem Al Jallaf, director of the General Department of Criminal Investigation at Dubai Police, said a team was formed to investigate the crime scene.

He said they got hold of a footage from a closed-circuit television (CCTV) installed at a nearby apartment complex that showed the driver not slowing down in spite of the presence of the woman crossing the road near a speed bump.

“We were able to identify the suspect after further investigation and arrested him at his residence. An on-site inspection of his vehicle revealed that the right side of the front car was seriously damaged and the bumper on the left side had fallen off. Accordingly, the car was confiscated and handed over to the General Department of Forensic and Criminology to collect evidence and follow the necessary procedures,” Al Jallaf added.

Al Jallaf said the circumstances surrounding the accident were difficult to investigate due to lack of evidence and information on the vehicle and its owner, except for a part of the car left at the scene. Apart from this, his car plate number was not captured by the surveillance cameras and there was no eyewitness.
