An art installation in Austria has turned an entire football stadium into a forest with 300 trees to draw attention to the campaign against climate change and deforestation.
CNN Travel reported that the Wörthersee Football Stadium in Klagenfurt has been replanted with a variety of trees, some of which weigh six tons each. The huge art installation consists of a diverse tree species including alder, aspen, white willow, hornbeam, field maple and common oak tree.
The Swiss artist Klaus Littmann drew inspiration from a 30-year-old dystopian drawing “For the Forest” by Austrian artist and architect Max Peintner. In the CNN report, Littmann was quoted as saying that the aim of the installation is to “challenge our perception of nature and question its future” and that forests “may someday only be found in specially designated spaces.”
Because of the “temporary art intervention”, the Austrian Football Second League team Austria Klagenfurt will have to play their home games at the nearby Karawankenblick Stadium from September 7 to October 27.
The public, on the other hand, can visit the forest and roam around it during the period.
After the duration of the art installation, the forest will be replanted at a public site close to the stadium as a “living forest sculpture” of the groundbreaking installation.
