More than a month after he took office, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno has shifted his focus on expanding Arroceros Park, the city’s last forested area and make Manila a green city.
Former Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada has proposed to level Arroceros Park and build a gym that can be used by Manila students.
“I will withdraw a portion of Arroceros Street for public use, then we will extend Arroceros Park,” Moreno said.
Environmentalists have been lobbying for the park’s preservation.
“We are going to create an esplanade at the back of Arroceros,” he added.
Initial plans will include closure of some streets around Quezon bridge to expand the park.
Moreno also eyes the removal of Arroceros gates. “I’ve always believed in an open park. Ang park hindi naka-preso,” he said.
The Manila mayor hopes to see 50%-60% of the plan done by yearend.
Manila’s Lawton area will also be converted into a green civic center.
Some 46 parks and institutions in Manila are also expected to follow through Moreno’s directives.
