Last-minute glitch: Comelec finds nearly 500 corrupted SD cards

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) had a number of last-minute glitches days before the midterm polls on Monday (May 13).

On Friday the COMELEC said that nearly 500 SD cards that will be used in storing encrypted ballots were malfunctioning and ‘corrupted’.

The poll body was quick to clarify that this will not pose a problem on election day because they had already sent out their replacements.

“We do not issue new SD cards unless we receive a corrupted card in return. When an SD card is reported as corrupted, we respond by preparing replacement cards. The replacement cards are then swapped with the corrupted cards, kaliwaan ‘yan,” Comelec spokesman Director James Jimenez said.

Comelec has 85,769 main SD cards and another 85,769 back-up SD cards for Monday’s polls, according to Jimenez, adding that there are contingency plans should these cards remain defective on election day.

Comelec is in the process of testing machines and paraphernalia for Monday’s elections.
