As most travellers in the Philippines go to Baguio, Coron, Palawan, and to the newly reopened Boracay, this is the perfect time to discover other less travelled islands in the Philippines such as the province of Misamis Occidental which is home to a nice beach, flowing waterfalls, and historic shrines.
Hoyohoy Highland Stone Chapel Adventure Park
The Hoyohoy Highland’s claim to fame is their Zipline attraction that overlooks Lanao del Norte, Tangub City, and Ozamiz City coupled with a majestic view of the sunrise and Panguil Bay. TripAdvisor user mscanastra from Burbank, California loved the overlooking views of the nature and its surrounding waters: “Upon heading up the top of the mountain is the Hoyohoy Park. Nice property. There stood a small stone chapel one could visit in peace. It was quite and what a view through the window. One should find time to take in the view and breath the organic air.”
Sunrise Beach
Nestled in Baliangao in Misamis Occidental is the Sunrise Beach – the ‘Boracay’ of Misamis Occidental, minus the huge crowds. cristabern from Bangkok, Thailand loved the serene view as since it is still in its pristine conditions, it’s the perfect place to relax – especially for those who love to travel solo. “The beach boasts of white sand and clear blue waters as well as a majestic sunrise view, hence its name. I suggest you go easy on the booze and wake up early. The sunsets are also quite amazing and we were able to capture the lavender sky.”
Sapang Dalaga Falls
Travellers who find themselves in this hidden paradise will enjoy the natural rock formations and flowing waterfall. “I think only few people knew this enchanting place I am myself was surprised when my uncle told me that there’s falls located 2 kilometres away from the highway. If you happen to travel to Misamis Occidental, don’t forget to check the falls,” shared TripAdvisor user Olecz A of Zamboanga City in the Philippines.
Caluya Shrine
One look at the Caluya Shrine and it will remind you of Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer. TripAdvisor Netter_V was captivated by the views that overlooked the Murcielagos and the Caluya Bay: “A 30-minute drive from Sapang Dalaga town centre, Caluya Shrine is a replica of Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer. The giant statue overlooks both Murcielagos and Caluya bays so after climbing the 190+ steps to the top, you are rewarded with breathtaking views. The scenery is just so beautiful, the fresh air soothing. The climb is an easy one, unless you have mobility problems. You can light candles at the Shrine. If visiting on a weekday, it is recommended to bring candles as the makeshift stalls at the foot of the Shrine may be closed.”
