Telecommunications company Globe announced on Monday, November 5, that the first ever embedded Subscriber Identification Module (eSIM) will be released in the country “before the year ends”.
The eSIM functions as a virtual sim card that is already embedded in devices with eSIM features. Users only need to purchase QR cards at Globe stores and scan it using their eSIM-capable devices.
“Before the year ends, Globe customers with eSIM-enabled devices can get QR cards at Globe Stores and scan it using their phone to activate their eSIM,” the company said.
Once activated, the eSIM would be able to allow multiple devices to share the same mobile number and allow users to create and manage multiple accounts.
For instance, a person visiting another country only needs to create another account to have a mobile number that is usable in that particular country.
eSIMs are in its testing phase as Globe tests it on eSIM-enabled gadgets such as iPhone Xs, Xs Max, and XR; Apple Watch and Huawei Watch.
The move to introduce eSIM technology in the country is a part of Globe’s efforts to reduce plastic use and support sustainable technologies.
Currently, the technology is available in only ten countries such as the the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Singapore.
