The Department of Transportation has warned Public Utility Jeepney (PUJ) drivers that traditional jeepneys will be completely phased out by 2020.
According to Transportation Assistant Secretary Mark de Leon, old jeepneys will be sold for P20,000- P30,000 to accredited scrapping companies.
There are around 170,000 jeepneys that will be affected by the phase-out.
Meanwhile, PUJ drivers’ earnings from the deal can serve as initial down-payment for the modern jeepneys.
The government will fund each owner with P80,000 to make-up the P100,000 down-payment.
Owners of the jeep can pay for a monthly fee until they can complete the P1.8 million payment for the new vehicles.
The jeepney modernization program of the government is believed to ease the heavy traffic within Metro Manila, reported Remate.
