The Abu Dhabi Municipality has demolished 220 abandoned buildings and approved the demolition of 272 others after the owners of the buildings failed to take action on earlier orders issued by the government.
The municipality explained that the buildings not only distort the appearance of the Capital, but also put the lives of those living nearby in danger. The municipality said the buildings contribute to pollution and cause inconvenience to residents.
Currently, 37 abandoned buildings are under demolition while two others are under review.
The municipality also identified several abandoned buildings in Abu Dhabi including industrial plots, commercial outlets, residential buildings and communal housing.
The authorities assured that their processes follow the laws and regulations in the emirate and in the UAE.
Before any demolition, the municipality alerts owners of the buildings of the importance and necessity of maintaining them. In case of failure to perform the required maintenance work within the time limit granted to them, the case is transferred to the municipal prosecutor to take the necessary legal procedures.
