Hotels and famous landmarks in the scenic city of Dubai turned their lights off last Saturday to mark the annual Earth Hour.
The Burj Khalifa, dubbed the world’s tallest building, the Burj Al Arab and other establishments dimmed their lights for an hour starting 8:30 pm in a bid to promote a global call of action on climate change.
Other private business also participated in this year’s Earth Hour. Aside from switching off their lights, the Majid Al Futtaim malls also ran their websites on power saving mode.
Across Marza Plaza, Al Badia Hillside and Al Badia Residences, Festival Tower and Dubai Festival City Mall, all exterior lights were dimmed.
“Due to the active participation and commitment of the government, private companies and citizens, Earth Hour in UAE has transformed into a global phenomenon. This can only be put down to the hard work and commitment of passionate individuals and organisations who have tirelessly worked to raise awareness during the past Earth Hours,” Habiba Al Marashi, chairwoman of the Emirates Environmental Group said.
Earth Hour, a global event organized by the World Wide Fund, marks its 11th year in 2018. The theme for this year’s Earth Hour is ‘Let Nature Shine’.
