DOLE forms group aiming to protect OFWs

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) formed a group that will coordinate with the government of the country with an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) to make sure they are being treated properly.

DOLE’s official website indicated the Technical Level Negotiating Team, which was formed under the Administrative Order No. 138-A, will coordinate with the OFWs host country to make sure the employee’s right and welfare are protected under the employer’s contract.

The group will be in coordination with the Department of Foreign Affairs.

It is also tasked to give OFW plans in negotiation and prepare  them for the implemented protocol and standard employment contract if necessary

“Bibigyang prayoridad ng grupo ang pagpapatupad ng pamantayan at mekanismo para sa proteksiyon at pangangalaga sa kagalingan at interes ng mga OFW, at pagtataguyod ng kasunduan sa pagitan ng ating bansa at ng host country,” said Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III.

DOLE Assistant Secretary for Legal, Legislative and Internal Affairs Joji V. Aragon will lead the negotiation team while the deputy administrators for landbased and seabased of Philippine Overseas Employment Administration will serve as assistant team leader.

The team will also have International Labors Affair Bureau Director, Legal Service Director, Vice-Chairperson of the Bilateral Review Committee, at Labor Attaché

The Labor Attache assigned to a host country will be part of the bilateral agreement. He/she is also expected to have a constant communication with the Philippine Embassy or Philippine Consulate of the country.
