Social media enable us to connect and communicate with our friends, family, and a much larger audience online. However, an alarming phenomenon has emerged where features such as live streaming and video call messaging allow people taking their own life to broadcast in real-time.
Former overseas Filipino worker (OFW) Delfin Dennis Carreon was found dead in his room in Valenzuela City on September 7, Thursday.
Carreon, 30, was last seen alive by his friend Eddie Chris Ibe at around 3:30 am through Facebook’s video chat.
According to Ibe, Carreon thanked him through a Facebook message to which he replied asking if Carreon was able to arrive back home.
Carreon replied with a selfie showing a rope tied around his neck and asked Ibe to wait for him to go live on Facebook.
Ibe and Carreon’s sister, Mariedelle Lim, rushed to Carreon’s house and found him hanging from the ceiling in his bedroom.
With the World Suicide Prevention Day celebrated last Sunday, September 10, Health Secretary Paulyn Ubial urged family members to listen to their family members and friends for what may seem like “cries for help”.
“Know the warning signs of suicidal behaviors such as withdrawing from friends, expressing hopelessness, unexpected joke about suicide and engaging in self harm,” Inquirer quoted Ubial as saying.
The police are still investigating what prompted the former OFW to commit suicide.
