Espenido’s deployment to Iloilo stumps mayor
President Rodrigo Duterte has assigned controversial Chief Insp. Jovie Espenido as police chief of Iloilo city. Espenido is currently the chief of police in Ozamiz City, Misamis Occidental and previously served as police chief in Albuera, Leyte. Mayors of both divisions were killed in alleged police shootouts after being linked to drug trades. Duterte reminded Espenido to uphold the rule of law and avoid stop unlawful killings.

10 Maute reinforcements slain
Government troops killed 10 terrorists, who are believed to be reinforcements for Maute group’s operations in Marawi City. The suspected terrorists were killed in a three-hour clash in Lanao Lake, Lanao del Sur, which was carried out while the deceased were trying to sneak into the main battle area. Lt. Gen. Carlito Galvez Jr., commander of the Armed Forces of the Philippines Western Mindanao Command, said the successful operation mirrors the troops’ coordination with local government units.

‘Unlawful killings not allowed’
President Rodrigo Duterte assured that abuse and unlawful killing will not be tolerated under his helm. In a speech during the celebration of National Heroes Day in Taguig City, Duterte reminded the police force to uphold the rule of law and to not commit murder and homicide during anti-drug operations.

Military braces for big battle
Government troops fear that the death of Cayamora Maute, the father of the masterminds behind the firefights in Marawi, could spark outrage from the terrorist groups who are still fighting in the besieged city. Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Spokesman Restituto Padilla Jr. said Cayamora’s death may lead to “bolder actions” from the terrorist side. The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology confirmed that Cayamora was declared dead on arrival at Taguig Pateros District Hospital on August 27 after his blood pressure shot up.
