The Philippines is signing before yearend a contract for the delivery of Russian weapons with “excellent prices”, according to Philippine Ambassador to Russia Carlos Sorreta.
“The equipment from Russia, although we are not familiar with it, is really worth the price and the prices are excellent,” TASS quoted Sorreta as saying on Friday.
The financing terms for the arms order are very liberal, Sorreta added.
The ambassador said he is hoping the arms transactions can be concluded soon.
The remarks follow the conclusion of defense agreements between the two countries during President Rodrigo Duterte’s visit to Russia last month.
At the end of May, Russia’s foreign minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed Russian and Philippine intentions to seal some agreements, including defense deals, after a meeting with his Philippine counterpart Alan Peter Cayetano, TASS reported.
