Seven earthquakes were recorded in Cebu province Monday, March 21, in a span of less than 6 hours, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
The first tremor, Phivolcs said hit at 3:41 am with a magnitude of 3.6 and a depth of 1 kilometer.
Intensity 4 was felt in Asturias and Busay towns, and Cebu City and intensity 3 struck in Mandaue, while intensity 2 was experienced in Lapu-Lapu, as reported by ABS-CBN News.
Two minutes later, a magnitude 4.8 quake, the strongest of the 7 recorded today, struck the province.
With a depth of 25 kilometers, it was felt at Intensity 3 in Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue cities.
Five weaker earthquakes followed at 3:58, 4:41, 4:50, 6:17 and 9:13 in the morning.
Phivolcs recorded a magnitude of 2.9 for 2 quakes, and magnitudes of 3.3, 3.2, and 2.7 for the rest.
The epicenters of all 7 earthquakes, which were tectonic in origin, were traced in Asturias town.
It is only normal, Phivolcs research assistant Karen Garcia said for strong earthquakes to trigger weak tremors, as in the case of the first 2 quakes that rocked Cebu today.
As of this writing, Phivolcs has not received reports of damaged property due to the earthquakes, according to Garcia. -KCO
