Disney UK and Disney Ireland has reeased on November 9 its Christmas advertisement this year, which features Filipino yuletide traditions.
Part of its campaign ‘From Our Family To Yours’, Disney’s ad touches on family and traditions familiar to Filipino communities.
The ad begins in the 1940s, set in a rural town in the Philippines. The father greets his young daughter who calls him ‘tatay’, and gives her a Mickey Mouse stuffed toy.
It then fasts forward to 2005, where the girl is now an elderly—called by granddaughter as Lola—in a wintery town in the UK. She makes Christmas lanterns or parols with her “apo” with the same Mickey Mouse stuffed toy keeping them company.
Years pass and the granddaughter becomes less and less interested in making parols as she grows older. Now a young adult, she gives her lola a kiss on the cheek before heading out—making the elderly sad.
The granddaughter comes home, fixes the Mickey Mouse stuffed toy (which has become earless), and creates parols to fill up their home. The lola wakes up to this, taking her right back to her Christmas memories in the Philippines.
Disney said the ad is said to air on Disney’s channels in the Europe, the Middle East and Africa, as well as Australia, New Zealand, North America and parts of Asia. The proceeds from the sale of Mickey Mouse stuffed toys will be donated to Make-A-Wish organizations.
