RAK authorites debunk rumors on social media

Residents in Ras Al Khaimah have been advised that certain photographs and videos circulating on social media platforms are fake.  The authorities stated on Twitter that the story is “groundless.”

Residents have also been instructed by the police to obtain information from reliable and legitimate sources. The authorities noted that community members must do so to prevent legal action and any confusion caused by the spread of disinformation.

According to Article 52 of the law, anybody who uses the internet to publish, distribute, or spread fake news, rumors, or misleading information that contradicts official sources might face a year in prison and a fine of AED100,000.

If the disseminated false news or rumours incite public sentiment against state authorities or occur during times of pandemic, crisis, or tragedy, the perpetrator faces at least two years in prison and a fine of AED200,000.
