Speed adjustment could help save fuel costs in UAE

With fuel prices rising in the UAE, speed adjustment can help greatly reduce the fuel costs.

Prof Turlough Downes, of the School of Mathematics at Dublin City University, an astrophysicist, said that fuel consumption is about 28 per cent higher at 100kph than at 80kph, in his interview at The National.

Fuel use is determined by air resistance and if a car accelerates from 80kph to 160kph, air resistance does not double, it quadruples.

At 120kph, fuel costs are 63 percent higher than at 80kph while at 140kph they are nearly 103 percent higher.

With a fuel price of AED3.62 per liter, a journey of 139km, and a speed of 80kph, the Dubai-Abu Dhabi journey takes 104.25 minutes and costs AED30.19.

At speed of 100kph the trip lasts 83.4 minutes and costs AED38.68 while at 120kph, the journey time of 69.5 minutes costs AED49.06.

At a speed of 140kph the cost would be AED61.33 for 59.6 minutes.

Prof Downes also found the roof box increased fuel on the journey.
