Over 8,000 patients receive eczema treatment in GCC – experts

Skin experts in the UAE have highlighted that over 8,000 patients suffering from moderate to severe eczema had received treatment in the GCC region.

A high-level summit organized by Sanofi revealed that to date, over 1,000 doctors have been prescribing new and innovative therapy for these patients which has since revolutionised the treatment for eczema – which is known to commonly cause dry, itchy, and red skin amongst patients.

Dr. Muna Al Murrawi, consultant dermatologist and president of Emirates Dermatologists Society underscored the importance of such a summit where over 200 doctors specializing in dermatology gathered to gain insights from 23 international experts who spoke about the latest state-of-the-art breakthroughs to treat, diagnose, provide care for individuals suffering from eczema.

“This summit is a great platform to improve awareness about inflammatory skin diseases. It’s our job to make our population aware of eczema and other type 2 inflammatory skin diseases. Educating on preventive measures is crucial because when eczema starts to aggravate, it might also have a secondary bacterial infection from the scratching, necessitating systemic therapy,” said Dr. Al Murrawi in a report from Khaleej Times.

Statistics shown during the summit reveal that this chronic skin condition is currently affecting 11 per cent of the UAE’s adult population and 24 per cent among adolescents in the country.

Jean-Paul Scheuer, MCO lead and general manager for Sanofi Greater Gulf, highlighted that providing appropriate treatment against eczema gives hope for families who have kids suffering from this skin ailment to live normal lives.

“Can you imagine the nightmare that these kids have to live with and their lives after they start to use an effective and safe solution? Now the kid is going to beach and is living a normal life,” added Scheuer as per reports from Khaleej Times.
