Duterte gives cash incentives to Tokyo Olympics medalists

President Rodrigo Duterte handed out cash rewards and other incentives to Filipino athletes who won medals in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Filipina weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz was given PhP10 million for winning the country’s first gold medal and aside from this reward, Diaz also received a Php3 million cash incentive from the Office of the President, Php5 million from Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation and Philippine Sports Commission, and a housing unit from the National Housing Authority.

Silver medalist Nesthy Petecio also received Php5 million, an additional Php2 million from the Office of the President, and a housing unit while Carlo Paalam got Php5 million for winning the silver medal in the men’s flyweight division. He also got an additional Php2 million from the President as well as a housing unit.

Apart from a Php2 million cash incentive, Eumir Marcial also received an additional Php1 million for bagging the bronze medal at the men’s middleweight division.

1996 Summer Olympic Silver medalist Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco Jr received a PhP500,000 cash incentive from the Office of the President.

The cash rewards were given under the Republic Act 10699 or the “National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act.” (AW)
