DOH: First case of Lambda variant in PH a pregnant woman, not an OFW

The Department of Health (DOH) said Monday that the first case of the Lambda variant in the country is not a returning overseas Filipino, but rather a local case.

DOH Undersecretary Ma. Rosario Vergeire said the 35-year-old woman who was confirmed to have contracted the Lambda variant was pregnant when she tested positive for COVID-19. She has since recovered, said Vergeire.

The DOH is also verifying if she has given birth since her expected delivery date is in late July, Vergeire said.

“Base sa aming datos, the patient is a local case, hindi siya returning overseas Filipino,” Vergeire said in an interview with Teleradyo.

“Itong ating kababayan na nagkaroon nito, wala siyang sintomas. Pero siya ay kailangan i-monitor nang maigi dahil buntis po siya,” Vergeire said.

According to Vergeire, the World Health Organization has not yet considered Lambda variant as a “variant of concern” and it remains to be a “variant of interest.”

“Ibig sabihin, hindi ho pa significant para doon sa classification ng variant na ito to affect the population,” Vergeire said.
