US bans dog imports from the Philippines, 112 other countries over ‘high rabies risk’

The United States Embassy in Manila announced that it has banned the entry of dogs coming from the Philippines and 112 other countries due to high rabies risk.

In an announcement on Twitter, the Embassy said that the US Center for Disease Control (CDC) prohibited 113 countries from exporting dogs to the United States starting July 14, 2021.

“NOTICE: @CDCgov has suspended the importation of dogs to the U.S. from countries, including the Philippines, classified by the CDC as high risk for dog rabies,” US Embassy wrote.

“@CDCgov also suspended the importation of dogs from countries that are not at high risk if the dogs have been in high-risk countries during the previous 6 months,” the announcement added.

The Embassy adds that written approval from the CDC is needed if a dog from high-risk countries will be brought to the United States.

The approval however will be on an extremely limited basis.

“If you wish to import a dog from a high-risk country, you must request advance written approval (CDC Dog Import Permit) from CDC by emailing [email protected] at least 30 business days (6 weeks) before you intend to enter the United States,” the notice added.

According to Mayo Clinic, Rabies is a deadly virus spread to people from the saliva of infected animals. The virus is often transmitted through a bite. (TDT)
