WHO reveals around 115,000 heathcare workers died from COVID-19

The World Health Organization said that around 115,000 healthcare workers have died from COVID-19.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has paid tribute to the work of health care professionals worldwide.

“Many have themselves become infected, and while reporting is scant, we estimate that at least 115,000 health and care workers have paid the ultimate price in the service of others,” Tedrod said.

Tedros warned that the coronavirus pandemic rages on. The number of people dying from the virus is expected to overtake last year’s figures.

“No country should assume it is out of the woods, no matter its vaccination rate. So far, no variants have emerged that significantly undermine the efficacy of vaccines, diagnostics or therapeutics. But there is no guarantee that will remain the case,” he said.

“We must be very clear: the pandemic is not over, and it will not be over until and unless transmission is controlled in every last country,” the WHO chief went on.

Based on the Johns Hopkins data, some 3.4 million people around the world have died from the disease.

The WHO chief also laments the global vaccine roll out.

“More than 75% of all vaccines have been administered in just 10 countries. There is no diplomatic way to say it: a small group of countries that make and buy the majority of the world’s vaccines control the fate of the rest of the world,” he said.

He also urged countris in making sure 10 percent of the entire world’s population will be vaccinated against COVID-19. (TDT)
