Thai PM fined for not wearing mask amid COVID-19 spike

Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha was fined for not wearing a face mask during a meeting about the COVID-19 situation in Thailand.

In a Facebook post, the prime minister shared a picture of the meeting where everyone was seen wearing masks except him.

Under the COVID-19 protocols in Thailand, wearing a face mask in public is compulsory.

Thailand is facing an outbreak of COVID-19 traced in the capital’s nightlife district.

The prime minister was heavily criticized on social media, prompting Bangkok governor Aswin Kwanmuang to slap Prayut with a fine of 6,000 baht (US$190) for breaching the rules.

The governor said Prayut made an inquiry if he violated rules, AFP reported.

“I informed him that his action violates the announcement by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration which ordered people in Bangkok to wear surgical masks or cloth masks anytime they leave their residence,” Aswin said.

Meanwhile, the Facebook post was deleted and then re-uploaded sans the controversial picture.
