Six sailors rescued from sinking dhow in Dubai Creek

Police rescued six Asian sailors from a sinking dhow in Dubai Creek.

According to Dubai Police’s Maritime Police Department, water started to come in from a huge crack that was formed due to cargo overloading.

Patrols were dispatched immediately after receiving the distress call from the captain of the wooden boat.

“The Command and Control Centre at Dubai Police received an emergency call from the dhow’s captain as water filled started filling their boat as they were sailing out of Dubai Creek onto an Asian country,” said Lieut Col Ali Abdullah Al Naqbi, head of the Maritime Rescue Department at the Ports Police Station.

The crew were rescued while the boat was saved from sinking.

He added that police divers found a huge crack prompting the authorities to move the dhow to the nearest dock to avoid further damage.

“Our teams succeeded in towing the dhow to a nearby dock, then our divers installed special rescue balloons to help keep the boat afloat,” he said.

Police said the crew of the vessel were all Asians of origin but they did not disclose their nationality.

Meanwhile, the officer urged boats, yacht, and ship owners to use the Sail Safely service on Dubai Police app to send distress calls immediately to the police and ensure rapid responses by authorities during an emergency. (RA)
