The Philippine Institute for Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recently published their ‘Earthquake Scenario’ note that highlights the possibility of Metro Manila experiencing an earthquake with a devastating magnitude of 7.2.
Experts point towards the Philippines’ West Valley Fault that stretches for 100 km at the eastern part of Metro Manila, including parts of Bulacan, Rizal, Cavite, and Laguna.
“Ang buong Metro Manila kasama ang ilang bahagi ng Bulacan, Rizal, Cavite at Laguna ay makakaramdam ng Intensity VIII na lindol. Dahil sa tindi ng lakas ng pagyanig ito ay lubhang mapaminsala,” as per the statement from Phivolcs.

Phivolcs fears that the devastating earthquake might lead to the deaths of over 30,000 people and leave 14,000 more injured. The earthquake monitoring bureau also anticipates that the quake may lead to a huge Php 2 trillion dent in the Philippine economy.
Scenarios, not predictions
Phivolcs stresses that the scenarios that they share to the public are to help local governments anticipate and plan ahead of the possible repercussions that will be caused by massive earthquakes.
“Ang DOST-PHIVOLCS ay nagbibigay ng mga EARTHQUAKE SCENARIOS at HINDI EARTHQUAKE PREDICTIONS. Sa kasalukuyan, maging sa ibang bansa, wala pang maasahang teknolohiya, instrumento at siyentipikong kaalaman na makakapagsabi ng eksaktong oras, petsa at lokasyon ng isang malakas na lindol,” said the announcement from Phivolcs.
