Experts tackle importance of keywords in online job applications

As online application is becoming the preferred method of hiring in the UAE, Filipino applicants should know how to input the right keywords in order to have better chances of getting job interviews, according to experts.

In The Filipino Times’ live streaming on Facebook titled ‘TFT Usapang OFW: Oplan Hanap Trabaho sa UAE,’ esteemed experts and professionals discussed the importance of keywords in looking for a job, especially since most companies use an online application tracking system.

According to Cristina Calaguian—the founder of Dagaz HR Consultancy and Recruitment Company that helps match employees with potential employers in the region, and The Filipino Times Awards 2018 Entrepreneur of the Year finalist—walk-in applications are now a thing of the past, and that employers are not entertaining them anymore.

This is why, she said, applicants should know the right keywords to input in their resume so their CV will stand out.

“If you’re submitting your resumes, dapat alam mo ang tamang keywords kasi ang online application system ng companies, nag-b-base sa keywords kapag nag-s-shortlist sila ng applicants,” she said.

Dr. Rex Bacarra, the Dean of General Education at the American College of Dubai and The Filipino Times Educator of the Year 2019, advised Filipino applicants to check the words used in job postings, and mirror those words in their own CVs.

“As a tip, it is necessary to look into job adverts, paraphrase their keywords, and put those in your CVs,” he said.

He added that when looking for a specific job, having the right keywords is also vital to know the right company or profession most suitable for you.

“When searching for a specific job, as long as marami kang keywords na specific sa strength mo, ‘yon ang gagamitin mo. The more keywords, the better,” said Bacarra.
