PH team hoping to get elusive gold in int’l math Olympiad

The Philippines has always had a good winning streak in the International Mathematical Olympiad. But a gold medal remains elusive.
This time, however, the Philippine team is eyeing the big prize.

A six-man national team is bound for Hong Kong on July 9 to participate in the 57th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), one of the world’s most prestigious mathematics contests.

The Philippine team is composed of previous IMO participants Clyde Wesley S. Ang of Chiang Kai Shek College, Farrell Eldrian S. Wu of MGC New Life Christian Academy, Albert John Patupat of Holy Rosary College, and Kyle Patrick F. Dulay of Philippine Science High School – Main Campus.

Completing the team are Shaquille Wyan Que of Grace Christian College and Vince Jan Torres of Sta. Rosa Science and Technology High School.

Leading the team is Dr. Richard Eden and Deputy Team Leader Dr. Louie John Vallejo of the Mathematical Society of the Philippines (MSP).

The contest, which is being held in Hong Kong, started July 6 and would end July 16.

Dr. Josette Biyo, Director of the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), said in a statement that the Philippine team is a strong contender for the gold, given its performance in the 2015 IMO when the team won for the country two silvers and two bronzes along with an honorable mention.

“When we dream of that gold medal, it represents the progress we achieve in this field. It signifies hope; one that grows each time prove something to the world,” Biyo said.
