Resorts World pays kins of casino fire victims

The chairman of Travellers International Hotel Group, owner of Resorts World Manila (RWM) , has promised to compensate the families of 62 people, who were killed and injured in the fire at the casino-hotel on June 2.

David Chua, a Hong Kong national, made the promise during a hearing on the fire conducted by the House committee on tourism on Wednesday.

House Majority Leader Rep. Rodolfo Fariñas of Ilocos Norte and Rep. Lucy Gomez, chair of the committee, called the hearing to get assurance from RWM that it will ensure the welfare of all those affected by the tragedy and the hotel-casino’s 6,000 employees.

Chua told the committee that the families of the victims have been given financial assistance, including the educational financing for the children of 37 people who died in the fire.

RWM president Kingson Sian informed congressmen in the hearing that the families of 31 of the 37 who died due to suffocation received P1 million each and 35 others, who were injured and hospitalized, were given P500,000 each.
