Iran terror attacks over with 12 dead, IS claims responsibility

The terrorist attacks in Iran were over Wednesday with 12 people reportedly killed and about 40 others wounded, reported the state news agency IRNA.

The Interior Ministry issued a statement saying that security forces have killed three gunmen who attacked the parliament in Tehran and one of the gunmen who attacked the mausoleum of imam Ayatollah Khomeini. Two suicide bombers also died after detonating their explosives at the parliament and outside the mausoleum.

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the twin attacks.

The parliament attackers were able to enter the building disguised as women, security officials said. Once inside, they started shooting. One of the four detonated himself.

Several attackers also opened fire at the mausoleum and a female suicide bomber detonated herself outside the shrine. Security forces gunned down one of the gunmen.

It was the first attack by the IS in Iran, likely in retaliation for Tehran’s military support to the forces of Bashar al-Assad in Syria that are fighting IS militants.
