The Philippine National Police (PNP) said that it will be placing all units into heightened alert status over the week-long strike organized by some transport groups due to the public utility vehicle modernization program.

In a GMA News report, PNP Public Information Office chief Police Colonel Red Maranan said that 80% of the police force will be on duty beginning Monday to ensure safety during the strike.

“Itataas natin ang ating alert status. Magpapakalat tayo ng mga police natin doon sa mga lugar kung saan sumasakay ang ating mga kababayan para makapagbigay tayo ng kaukulang seguridad sa ating mga kababayan,” Maranan said in an interview.

“Bukas o mamayang gabi ay ibababa ang heightened alert status natin,” he added.

The PNP said that it will be allocating mobile patrol vehicles to provide free rides to commuters and their target destinations.

Maranan added that the public should just go out if they have important things to do outside their homes during the strike.

Some transport groups said that they will be holding a strike from March 6-12 in opposition of the deadline imposed by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board or LTFRB to phase out traditional jeepneys.
