Less than a year before the 2022 elections, Vice President Leni Robredo revealed she is still studying the “feasibility” of running for president.
In a virtual public policy forum hosted by Cambridge University, Robredo said that the poll is still far from her mind.
“A lot of people are rushing me to make a decision already, but it’s not that easy because the feasibility of a presidential run is one of the primary considerations,” Robredo said. “That remains to be seen in the next few months or so.”
The filing of candidacy for national posts on 2022 elections is scheduled in October.
Robredo who also serves as chairman of the Liberal Party admitted that the party suffered a massive defeat after 2016 polls.
“I’m a very new politician. I belong to a party, which you know, after the 2016 elections, was almost decimated to the ground.
“Meaning to say, there’s been a lot of migration between and among parties,” she stressed.
Many former members of Liberal Party bolted out to join President Rodrigo Duterte’s PDP-Laban and other parties allied with the president.
Robredo pointed out that the opposition should come out with a single candidate to beat the presidential bet of the Duterte administration.
“I believe that there should be only one opposition candidate in the 2022 elections,” Robredo said.
“Many different candidates will only ensure another six years of victory of the same kind of governance that the last five years has given us,” she added.
Meanwhile, she pointed out that the first move to have a single candidate is to unite the opposition.
