‘Unfortunate mistake’: Hospital cuts wrong foot of patient during operation

A hospital in Austria made a big mistake after cutting off the wrong foot of a patient.

In a Reuters report, the Freistadt Clinic said that what happened with the patient was a result of human error.

The 82-year-old patient has a number of illnesses and his doctors see the need to amputate his left food.

“We are deeply shocked that on Tuesday, May 18, despite quality assurance standards, the wrong leg of an 82-year old man … was amputated,” the clinic said.

The mistake was only uncovered when medical staff were changing the man’s bandage.

Initial investigation showed that there’s a mistake on the mark indicating which foot will be cut off during the operation.

“Unfortunately the mistake, in which the right leg was removed instead of the left, occurred as a result of a sequence of unfortunate circumstances,” the hospital said.

The hospital offered the patient psychosocial support and the next operation on the correct foot has already been scheduled. (TDT)
