DUBAI: Approximately six of every 10 nurses in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
This was according to Filipino Nurses’ Association in the Emirates (FNAE) head Raymond Datinggaling. He said there are approximately over 20,000 Filipino nurses in the UAE working in the government and private sector, including homecare companies.
The group said the number of OFW nurses in the UAE represents approximately 60% (6 out of 10) of the overall total.
Consul General Paul Raymund Cortes said there is an apparent preference for Filipino nurses in the UAE because they “embody the excellent and sterling repute of the Filipino professional”.
“They are knowledgeable, technically adroit, highly skilled and educated, nurturing, caring, and warm. That many of our nurses continue to enjoy the confidence of the UAE community speaks highly of our dedication to be productive migrants, responsible global citizens, and a sharing people,” Cortes said.

Overseas Filipino workers (OFW) sent home the third biggest remittances among other expatriates working in the UAE last year.
Filipino workers in the UAE sent Dh3.2 billion or 7.1 percent of the entire remittances from the Emirates. This is the third biggest remittance sent home by expatriates in the UAE.
The UAE ranked third in the volume of remittances last year, according to Wall Street Exchange that pushes for the Filipino nurses’ recognition in the upcoming Angel Awards to emphasize their exemplary contribution in society.
As per the Central Bank of the Philippines (CBP), remittances of OFWs around the world comprise approximately 10 percent of the Philippines’ Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

According to the Federal Statistics and Competitive Authority in 2014, there were 79 hospitals, 10,165 physicians and 16,882 nurses in the private sector. The agency also said there were 36 hospitals, 6,504 physicians and 16,547 nurses in the government sector.
