The visa-free entry to Taiwan for Filipinos may be extended for another year.
This as Taiwan’s Central News Agency (CNA) said the decision to approve a visa-free policy extension was made during a recent meeting convened by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and attended by officials from agencies overseeing national security, the police, immigration, investigations, tourism, the economy and trade.
However, citing Chang Ching-sen, described in its report as “minister without portfolio,” CNA said the final decision will still have to be approved by the Cabinet.
The proposed extension, which will last until July 31, 2020, includes Thailand, Brunei and Russia.
Taiwan initially gave the Philippines a nine-month trial period in 2016 to further boost the country’s tourism.
Taiwan has seen significant increase in tourist arrivals since it relaxed visa rules for 18 countries in August 2016.
Records show that about 290,000 visitors came from the Philippines last year, up from 172,000 the previous year.
