As the Philippines celebrates Araw ng Kagitingan today, April 9 – no less than the President himself, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, led the commemoration day by sharing an inspiring message for all Filipinos, especially those who fought valiantly during the war.
“Today, we remember the heroism of the brave Filipino and American soldiers who stood side by side in the mountains and jungles of Bataan in defense of our liberty and democracy,” said Duterte in his message.
The president also lauded the efforts of countless civilians who helped the soldiers by offering their aid in the spirit of fighting for the betterment of the nation. “We may not be able to memorialize all of them, but we will forever remember and honor their epic struggle and unshakable fortitude,” adds President Duterte.
Duterte wishes for the present and future generations to remember this day as an inspiration to uphold the sovereignty of the Philippines as well as protecting the rights of each Filipino and most importantly, their freedom. “As we hold this solemn observance, it is my hope that we will all be inspired to remain steadfast like our forefathers and their allies in upholding our sovereignty and in protecting the rights and freedoms that our people enjoy today.”
Araw ng Kagitingan is an official holiday in the Philippines, with the Philippine missions all around the world taking a day off in observance for the commemoration of the veterans as well.
